How to Get Rid of Old Junk During COVID

Whether you’re spring cleaning, or just routinely get rid of your junk, everything has changed ever since COVID hit, even the way you get rid of junk. Having to keep social distancing, curfews and all the other health and safety rules in mind, it can be pretty confusing to figure out how you’re supposed to get rid of the things that you no longer need in a way where you don’t end up harming yourself, or other people.

Although it might seem like you’re stuck with mountains of junk until the pandemic is over, you’re not. There are ways you can get rid of the junk safely and responsibly! Things might be different, but with a little tweaking the “normal” everything is possible!

#1: Check the donation points in your area

Most donation centers/points like GoodWill and Salvation Army are still functioning just like they usually did before the pandemic now that things have eased up a bit. You should be able to clean up everything you’re going to donate, and donate it just like you usually would. Keep in mind, if you go to the store and notice that there are a lot of people there, it’s best to wait in the car for a while and go in when there’s less of a crowd!

#2: Book an appointment and do a self drop off/pick up

If you’re still not comfortable going to the store, there’s a new way to donate your things too! Keeping social distance in mind, most donation centers have created a new system, where you can call them and book an appointment for donation. They’ll be able to set a time for you that only you will be at their designated location and be safer than walking into a closed space with other people. A lot of donation centers are also offering pick-up services too! So if you really don’t want to leave the house, you can sanitize your items, pack them up and have them pick them up for you! It’ll get rid of the junk and clutter, without putting you in harm’s way!

#3: Try getting rid of it online!

A lot of people hold on to their junk because it’s huge pieces like furniture that they can’t move on their own. But that doesn’t mean you have to throw everything away, and practically speaking, that’s not very easy to do anyway. Instead, put the things up on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and any other website online and either sell them, or list them as “free” so whoever is interested, can come over, and pick the items up themselves! That way, you won’t have to do any of the moving yourself and will still be rid of items that were otherwise “junk”!

#4: Go to recycling at odd hours

If your usual recycling service still only has drop off facilities, you might find that the stations are too crowded most of the day. People like to follow a routine and usually tend to do the recycling drop offs during business hours during the day. So, it’s a good idea to go during “off-peak” hours when it’s less crowded like at night time, or super easily in the morning! That way you’ll be able to get rid of the recyclable junk, and still remain safe while you do it!

#5: Hire a junk removal service

Finally, if none of these options seem to be the right fit, or you just can’t find the time in your day to go and deal with all of the junk yourself and get it to where it needs to go! Instead of leaving it be, search “junk removal San Jose”, or a junk removal service in your area, and go with the one that has positive reviews and have all of your junk professionally taken care of!
