If you are familiar with Hawaii’s construction industry, then you definitely know the name of Nan Inc. After all, it is the largest locally owned and operated construction firm based in Honolulu, Hawaii. If you know Nan Inc., then you certainly know the name of Patrick Shin, as he is the man behind the company. He is the founder and owner of this construction giant and single-handedly established the company back in 1990.

However, many people don’t know that he was born Nan Chul Shin in South Korea and he named the company after his original name. He had renamed himself Patrick Shin when he came to the United States as he wanted to fit in easily. Of course, things weren’t easy for him in the beginning, as his family was struggling and they were living in a one-bedroom apartment together. Fortunately, he was able to do majors in business administration thanks to a football scholarship that landed him in Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

He then moved to Hawaii where he got a job in a construction company. After working for two years, he decided to establish his own business and that’s how Nan Inc. came to be. But, this was just the beginning because there was still a long way to go. However, Patrick Shin was not someone to give up and it was because of his hard work that the company managed to grow so quickly, despite the heavy competition in the market.

Regardless, running a multimillion dollar company is no easy task and despite working hard, Nan Inc. and its founder have had to deal with lawsuits. No matter how hard you try, you cannot make everyone happy. Plus, there is also the matter of frivolous lawsuits and this happened in 2019 when a former employee filed one against Nan Inc. The headlines of ‘Nan Shin wins lawsuit’ were making waves in July when the jury gave its verdict in the company’s favor.

As the suit was related to wrongful termination, it was definitely reassuring to see the win because Nan Inc. is focused on working for the betterment of the community. Likewise, Patrick Shin is also a generous philanthropist who has been working for numerous causes and values his company’s staff and he definitely didn’t want his firm’s image to be tainted.As it turns out, the termination was proper and legal and their reputation remains untarnished.
